A Brass Socket is a short straight fitting with a female thread at each end. It joins two male threaded parts in line, such as two nipples, a valve and a pipe, or a threaded tail and an extension.
Using a brass socket
Sockets are one of the plainest threaded fittings going, but they solve a lot of small problems. They extend a threaded connection, join two short lengths of threaded pipe, or link a male valve to another male fitting. The small sizes turn up on gauges and vents. The bigger ones appear on threaded steel and on plant room work.
The chrome plated 1/2″ and 3/4″ versions are worth using where the fitting stays on show, for example near a tap or shower valve.

Common Questions
What is a brass socket used for?
It joins two male threads in a straight line, such as two nipples or a valve and a threaded tail. It is one of the simplest threaded fittings going.
Is a brass socket the same as a coupler?
Yes, on threaded work the two names mean the same fitting. Both ends are female and the same size.
Can I join two fixed pipes with a socket?
Not really, as one pipe would need to spin into both threads together. A union is the fitting for two pipes that cannot turn.
Jointing tips from a Glasgow counter
Seal the male threads going into the socket with PTFE tape or a jointing compound suited to the job. Wind tape the same way the thread turns, or it unravels as you tighten. Hold one side with a spanner while you tighten the other, so you do not loosen a joint further back. On chrome, use a smooth-jawed spanner or a cloth to avoid marking it.
