Brass Fittings

Brass is one of the most common materials used for making fittings, as a construction material is an alloy (primarily) of copper and zinc.

Brass fittings are in high demand because of some inherent properties which make them superior to other materials and are suitable for carrying water, gases, chemicals, fire sprinkler systems, etc. Brass and DZR fittings are designed and manufactured in sizes ranging from 1/8″ to 4″.

They are available in either BSPT parallel or taper threads to BS EN 10226-BSPT parallel or taper threads to BS EN 10226-1:2004/BS 21 – ISO7/1.

Most brass threaded fittings are hot forged, giving them greater strength to weight ratio.
Fittings made of brass are available in a wide variety of shapes and thread sizes to connect, control any air or liquid flow in a pipe or tube.

Brass fittings are used in industrial, automotive, and truck applications because they are strong and durable.
The advantages of brass for fittings include its good corrosive resistance, and also it’s plating, joining, polishing and finishing characteristics.

Brass as a material is easily machined and so can be given any shapes of the various types of fittings available.

 • Relative Softness of Metal Provides for a Tight Seal and Ease of Installation.
 • Brass provides a more solid platform (vs. plastics) to facilitate the flow of air and liquids.
 • Brass fittings have excellent high-temperature ductility and reasonable cold ductility.

Common Questions

Can I add an immersion heater to a cylinder that does not have one?

Only if the cylinder maker allows it and the wall is sound where the flange goes. Many fitters use a mechanical flange through a cut hole for this.

What size thread is an immersion heater?

Most UK immersion heaters use a 2.1/4″ thread, which is what this flange gives. Check your element’s thread before fitting.

Who should wire an immersion heater?

A competent electrician, as it is a fixed appliance on its own circuit. The plumbing side can be done first with the cylinder drained.
