What does an isolation valve actually do? It lets you cut the water to a single tap, cistern or appliance so you can work on it while the rest of the house stays on. Handy for swapping a tap or a fill valve without draining anything down.

Can you put isolation valves on central heating pipes? Yes, they’re often fitted on heating pipework, for example either side of a pump so it can be changed without draining the system. On radiators themselves, the valve on each end usually does the isolating job already.

Can I use a brass isolation valve on plastic pipe? You can, as long as you fit a pipe insert into the plastic pipe end so the compression olive has something solid to grip. Without the insert the pipe can squash and the joint may weep.

Which way do I turn an isolation valve to shut it off? Turn the slot a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe; when the slot lines up with the pipe, the water is flowing. A flat-blade screwdriver is all you need.

Do I need PTFE tape on an isolation valve? Not on the compression joints, as the olive makes the seal. A wee smear of jointing compound on the olive can help, but tape wrapped round the thread does nothing for a compression fitting.

What size isolation valve do I need? Match it to the outside diameter of your pipe. Most tap and appliance feeds are 15mm, while 22mm is used on the bigger supply runs.

Do isolation valves restrict flow? A full bore valve like this one keeps the opening the same size as the pipe, so it won’t choke the flow when fully open. Reduced-bore types can cut flow slightly, which matters more on low-pressure systems.
