Compression Female Elbow 12mm to 54mm

Where a pipe needs to turn a corner and finish in a female thread, the Compression Female Elbow does both jobs. One end takes copper pipe with a nut and olive, and the other end has a female thread at 90 degrees for a male fitting to screw into.

Picking a Compression Female Elbow size

The first number is the pipe size and the second is the thread. For example, 15mm x 1/2″ is the common size for valves and fittings on domestic water. 22mm x 3/4″ and 22mm x 1″ suit bigger valves and pump connections. The large sizes up to 54mm x 2″ are for commercial pipework.

Seal the male thread with PTFE tape or jointing compound before screwing it in, and tighten the thread before you make the Compression joint. That way you do not twist the pipe joint when doing up the threaded side.

Common Questions

What is a female elbow? It’s a 90 degree fitting with an internal thread on one end. On this one the other end is compression, so it joins a pipe to a threaded tap, valve or other part round a corner.

Are male and female elbows different? Yes. A male elbow has the thread on the outside, while a female elbow has it on the inside to take a male thread.

How do I fit a compression elbow? Make the compression joint first with the nut and olive, getting the angle right before tightening. Then do the threaded side, with PTFE tape on the male thread only.

Should I put sealant on the compression nut? No, the olive makes that seal on its own, and sealant can get in the way. Keep PTFE tape for the male thread going into the female end.

What pipe can I use it on? It suits copper pipe, or plastic pipe such as PEX or barrier pipe with a pipe insert.

Does the pipe need support near the elbow? Yes, clip the pipe close to the fitting on both sides so it isn’t strained, as movement can loosen either joint.
