Compression Tapered Male Elbow 15mm to 22mm

Think of the Compression Tapered Male Elbow as a male elbow with a taper thread. Copper goes into the Compression end, and the tapered male thread screws into a female socket at a right angle to the pipe. The taper pulls tight as it is screwed in, which helps the thread seal.

Sizes of the Compression Tapered Male Elbow

Only two sizes are sold. 15mm x 1/2″ suits small valves, fittings and appliance connections on domestic water and heating. 22mm x 3/4″ suits larger valves and bigger flow pipework, for example on a cylinder or boiler circuit.

Seal the taper with PTFE tape or a thread sealant, and screw it in until it is firm and pointing the right way. Do not chase extra turns once it is tight. Then fit the pipe with a new olive. If the elbow ends up pointing the wrong way, back the thread off and reseal it rather than overtightening.

Where would I use a Compression tapered male elbow?

On valves, fittings or appliance ports with a female thread, where the pipe has to come away at 90 degrees, for example on a cylinder or boiler circuit.

Do I still need PTFE on a tapered thread?

Yes. The taper itself makes the seal, but tape or a liquid sealant is still needed to fill the small gaps between the threads.

Is the 22mm x 3/4″ big enough for a cylinder connection?

If the cylinder tapping is a 3/4″ female thread, yes. Many cylinders have 1″ tappings, so check before buying.
