A Compression Male Elbow has a Compression end for copper pipe and a male threaded end set at 90 degrees. It lets you screw the pipe straight into a female socket, for example a cylinder boss, a valve body or an appliance inlet, while turning the corner at the same time.
Compression Male Elbow size guide
Read the size as pipe first, then thread. 15mm x 1/2″ is the one most fitters reach for on domestic work. The 22mm options come with 3/4″ or 1″ threads, and 28mm with 3/4″ or 1″. Small 8mm and 10mm sizes with 1/4″ or 3/8″ threads suit gauges and small controls. The 35mm x 1.1/4″ through to 54mm x 2″ sizes belong on larger plant and supply runs.
Wrap the thread in PTFE or coat it with jointing paste, then screw it into the socket first. Then make the pipe joint, so the elbow ends up pointing the right way.

What are the small male elbows like 8mm x 1/4″ used for?
Small bore work such as gauges, controls and small feed lines, where a fine thread and a thin pipe meet.
Male elbow pointing the wrong way once tight?
Reversing a sealed thread to line it up opens a leak path. Unscrew it fully, clean off the old tape or paste, apply fresh and refit.
Can I use the male elbow on a radiator?
Radiators normally take a radiator valve rather than a straight pipe fitting. Use a radiator valve with the right tail for the radiator tapping.
