Why fit the FloPlast Ring Seal Boss Pipe Socket/Spigot SP581

When you are building a stack in a bathroom, it makes sense to put a boss pipe in at the right height instead of adding strap bosses later. Each boss takes a boss adaptor, and the adaptor sets the waste size.

Mark the heights of the basin, bath and shower wastes on the wall first, allowing a fall on each. Then position the pipe so each boss sits level with its waste.

Chamfer cut pipe ends, apply silicone lubricant and push joints home. Turn the bosses to face the wastes before clipping.

Keep basin wastes short to avoid pulling the trap water out. Any boss left unused stays sealed, so there is no need to plug it.

Common Questions

How do I connect a waste to the boss pipe? Fit a boss adaptor into the boss to suit your waste size, then connect the waste pipe into it. FloPlast make both rubber push-fit and solvent adaptors for 32mm, 40mm and 50mm waste.

What is the spigot end of the boss pipe? It’s the plain bottom end, which pushes down into the socket of the fitting below. Lubricate it with silicone and push it in to the depth mark so there’s room for expansion.

Which boss adaptor codes do I need? SP10, SP11 or SP12 are the rubber push-fit adaptors for 32mm, 40mm or 50mm waste. SP20, SP21 or SP22 give a solvent joint to ABS waste instead.

Where should the bosses sit? Below the trap outlets, so each waste has a steady fall back to the stack. Work out your waste heights first and turn the bosses to face them before you bracket the pipe.

What’s the difference between a boss pipe and a strap boss? A boss pipe is built into the stack as you go, with the bosses moulded on. A strap boss clamps onto a pipe that’s already up, which is quicker if you only need to add one waste.

What colours does the SP581 come in? FloPlast make it in black, white and grey. There’s also a cast iron style version if you want that look.
