A normally open valve stays open with the power off and closes when powered, the opposite of the usual zone valve. A diverter sends water to heating or hot water, one at a time, so it suits hot water priority systems. The BSP valves screw onto threaded pipework rather than using compression nuts. The powerheads lift off the brass body, so a dead head can be changed without draining down.

The valve runs on mains voltage. Isolate the supply and wire it to the system diagram, or have a competent heating engineer do it.

What does normally open mean?

The valve is open when there is no power and closes when the thermostat or programmer powers it. Only fit one where the system was designed for it.

What is the difference between a diverter and a mid position valve?

A diverter feeds heating or hot water but never both at once. A mid position valve can feed both together, so check what the old valve was before swapping.

Can I just change the head?

Often, yes. If the brass body is sound and not passing, a new powerhead is the quicker job and the system does not need drained down.
