Common Questions

What does a double check valve do? It lets water flow one way only, so dirty water can’t be drawn back into the supply. This JG Speedfit one also has a service valve built in, so you get isolation and backflow protection in one 15mm fitting.

Do you need a double check valve on an outside tap? Yes, an outside tap needs backflow protection, and a double check valve is the usual way to give it. This one is for hot and cold water only, not central heating.

How do you install a double check valve? Fit it so the water flows in the direction of the arrow on the body. If you fit it backwards it will stop the flow.

Do double check valves reduce flow? Water has to push the checks open, so there is a small loss through the valve. On a normal domestic supply it is rarely noticeable.

How do you turn off the double check valve? Use the built-in service valve, which shuts the water off with a quarter turn. That lets you work on the tap or appliance beyond it without isolating the whole supply.

What pressure is the Speedfit double check valve rated to? It is rated to 12 bar on cold water at 20°C and 6 bar on hot. It is for hot and cold water only, not central heating.
