This lockshield valve with drain off 15mm sits on the return end of a radiator and has its own drain point, so you can empty one rad without draining the whole heating system. Pick one up at Plumb Parts in Glasgow.
A lockshield valve with drain off 15mm does the normal job of a lockshield, which is balancing the flow through the radiator, but it also has a small drain cock built into the body. That little extra makes life easier on the day you need to take the rad off the wall.
Why fit a lockshield valve with drain off 15mm
Normally, draining a single radiator means loosening the union nut and catching dirty water in a tray. With a drain off on the valve, you close both valves, push a hose onto the outlet and open it up. The water goes where you want it, not across the floor. It is a good shout for decorators who need rads off to paint behind them.
- 15mm pipe connection
- Lockshield for balancing the system
- Built-in drain point on the body
- Goes on the return end of the radiator
The lockshield cap covers the spindle, so nobody can turn the rad off by accident. Set it with a lockshield key or a small spanner during balancing, then refit the cap. Rads nearest the boiler usually need the lockshield closed down more than those at the far end. Remember that heating water is often black and sludgy, so have old towels handy.

Common Questions
What does the drain off on a lockshield valve do?
It is a small outlet that lets you empty that one radiator through a hose. Close both radiator valves first, then open the drain and let the rad empty into a bucket or drain.
Can a lockshield valve be used to turn a radiator off?
Yes, closing the lockshield along with the valve at the other end isolates the rad. Count the turns as you close it, so you can open it back to the same balance setting afterwards.
Which end of the radiator does a lockshield go on?
Normally the return end, with the TRV or wheelhead on the flow. On a system with no TRVs either end works, as long as the balance is set once the heating is running.
