The Solder Ring Air Vent Plug lets you bleed trapped air from 15mm copper heating pipework by hand. It solders onto the end of the pipe and has a small vent screw on top. Sold at Plumb Parts in Glasgow.

The Solder Ring Air Vent Plug is a 15mm copper fitting with a small vent screw, used to bleed trapped air out of heating pipework by hand. It suits plumbers and DIYers who need an air release point at a high spot in a system.
Where it goes
Air collects at the top of a run, at high loops over doorways and at the top of risers, and stops water getting round. Solder one of these on a short upstand or the end of a pipe at that high point. Opening the screw lets the air hiss out until water shows, the same way you bleed a radiator.

Fitting tips
Take the vent screw out before soldering so the seal is not cooked. Clean and flux the pipe and socket, push home and heat until solder shows round the joint, then let it cool and refit the screw. Fit it pointing up at the highest point and keep it where you can reach it later.

Common Questions
Is this an automatic air vent?
No, it is opened by hand. If you want air to clear on its own, fit an automatic air vent instead.
What do I open it with?
Usually a radiator key or a small flat screwdriver, depending on the screw. Have a cloth ready for the water that follows the air.
Can I fit it on a sealed system?
Yes. Top the pressure back up after bleeding, as letting air out drops the gauge reading.
