Description

The Stopcock Compression x Compression is a screw down stop valve with a compression joint at each end. We stock it in 15mm, 22mm and 28mm. A stopcock 15mm is the main shut off in most houses and flats on copper, usually where the supply comes in under the kitchen sink. The larger sizes suit bigger supplies and commercial buildings.

Turn the head clockwise to shut off the water beyond it. There is an arrow on the body for flow direction, and it must point away from the incoming main, or the stopcock will not shut off properly. Each end has a nut and olive, so no heat is needed. Hold the body with a second spanner when tightening, and clip the pipe firmly on both sides.

All three sizes are on the shelf in Glasgow. Collect from the shop or order online.

Common Questions

What is a stopcock?

It is a valve that shuts off the water supply to a property or part of one. Most homes have one where the main comes in, often under the kitchen sink.

Which way does a stopcock go in?

Follow the arrow on the body, pointing it away from the incoming main. Fitted backwards, the washer can lift off its seat and the valve will not shut properly.

How do I fix a dripping stopcock?

A drip from the spindle usually means the gland packing has worn. Nip up the gland nut a little; if that does not stop it, the packing needs replacing.

How do I turn off a stiff stopcock?

Turn the head clockwise with steady pressure, not a sudden heave. A little penetrating oil on the spindle and some gentle back and forth often frees it.
