Underground Pipe Single Socket 110mm x 3m is the standard length you lay most drains with: a 3 metre length of 110mm pipe with a Push-Fit Ring Seal socket formed at one end, plain at the other. Join lengths end to end and you need no couplers on a straight run.
What it’s used for
Foul drains from a soil stack or gully out to the sewer connection, surface water runs to a soakaway, and drains for extensions all go in with this. Each length’s plain end slides into the socket of the next one, so a 12 metre run takes roughly four lengths and a lot less fiddling than plain pipe and couplers.
If you only need a short piece, cut from the plain end and keep the socket. The offcut can usually be used between two bends or into a double socket fitting.
Cutting and laying
- Mark round the pipe and cut it square with a fine-tooth saw.
- Take the burr off and file a chamfer on the outside so it doesn’t push the seal out.
- Lubricate the spigot, push it fully in, then back off a few millimetres.
- Dig small holes in the bedding at each socket so the pipe sits on its barrel, not on the sockets.
- Keep the falls even. A sag in the middle of a run is where blockages start.
You’ll probably want bends too, and a rest bend at the foot of the stack. Couplers and plain-ended lengths, if you’d rather use those, are in our underground pipes section.

Common Questions
How do I lay single socket drain pipe?
Lay it with the sockets facing uphill, against the flow, and push each spigot into the socket of the pipe below. Keep the bed even and the fall constant from end to end.
What size hole do I need to bring a drain through a wall?
Make the hole a bit larger than the pipe and fit a sleeve or lintel so the wall does not rest on it. Fill the gap with a flexible material, not hard mortar.
Can I cut a single socket pipe?
Yes, cut it square and chamfer the plain end before it goes into a socket. The socket end stays as it is, so plan cuts from the spigot end.
