Universal Drop Valve

Fitting a universal drop valve sorts out the most common toilet fault: water trickling into the pan all day. Drop valves seal with a washer on the bottom of the cistern, and when that washer wears or gets grit under it, the leak starts.

What the universal drop valve includes

In the box is the valve with its chrome-on-plastic dual flush button. The flush volume adjusts and the overflow is built in. Fresh bolts, seals, nuts and a doughnut washer are supplied, so a close coupled toilet can be put back together with new parts.

Isolate the supply, flush and dry out the cistern, then remove it from the pan if close coupled. Clean the china, fit the valve and new seals, and bolt the cistern back on evenly. Set the flush volume to suit the pan.

If a drop valve leaks later, clean its seal before anything else. A bit of grit is often all it is.

What is a drop valve?

It is a flush valve that lifts a seal off the outlet in the bottom of the cistern to let water into the pan, then drops back down to close. Most modern dual flush cisterns use one in place of a syphon.

Why does a drop valve let water trickle into the pan?

Grit, limescale or a worn seal stops it closing fully. Clean the seal and the seat first, and if it still trickles, change the seal or the valve.

Will it fit my cistern?

Check the outlet size and the cistern depth against the old valve, and make sure the button will line up with the lid hole. Bring the old one in if unsure.
