A Solder Ring Union Connector joins copper tube to a female threaded port, with a union nut in the middle so the joint can be taken apart later. One end has a Solder Ring built in for the copper, and the other end is a male iron (BSP) thread.
Where a Solder Ring union connector helps
Any part you might need to swap one day is a good place for a union. Think pumps, cylinder connections, filters and plant room kit. Instead of cutting the pipe, you slacken the nut and the two halves part. The Solder Ring means no extra solder is needed for the copper side. You just clean, flux and heat until the ring shows all the way round.

Seal the male thread with PTFE tape or a thread sealant suited to the system. If possible, take the union apart before you solder so the seat is not overheated. Why fit a union connector rather than a male iron?
The union lets you undo the joint without turning the pipe or the fitting. That makes it easy to take out a pump or valve later.
Does the union need sealant?
The union seals on its own seat or washer, so it does not need tape. Seal the male thread with PTFE tape or paste where it screws into the port.
Which size do I need?
Match the thread to the port and the solder end to the pipe, so 22mm x 3/4″ for a 3/4″ port on 22mm pipe. The 1″ versions suit larger ports on 22mm or 28mm runs.
