An Essex Flange lets you add a new connection to a hot water cylinder or cold water tank, such as a dedicated feed for a power shower. It fits through a hole you cut in the wall of the vessel and is tightened from the outside, so you do not need to reach inside.
Why plumbers use an Essex flange
Getting a new outlet on a cylinder used to mean a top access cap, or taking the vessel out. The Essex flange avoids that, because it is fitted from one side only. That makes it handy in airing cupboards and lofts where the cylinder or tank is boxed in. There is no heat or solder involved, which is safer next to timber and insulation. It works on both hot and cold systems.

Drain the vessel down below the new hole first. Drill the cylinder or tank with the hole saw size printed in the instructions, then file the edge smooth.
