The FloPlast Washing Machine Trap is a 40mm trap that sits at the foot of a washing machine standpipe. It holds a seal of water so that smells from the drain cannot come back up the pipe and into the room.
What a washing machine trap is for
A washer pumps out a lot of water quickly, so it needs a full-size 40mm waste with a proper trap rather than a hose pushed into a sink outlet. This trap lets you build a standpipe drain point in a utility room, a kitchen or a garage. It is also a good fix where an old setup has no trap at all.
Fitting advice from our Glasgow team
Work out the standpipe height from the machine instructions before you set the trap height. Fix the standpipe so it cannot wobble, as the machine hose gets lifted in and out. Connect the outlet to the waste with the Compression nut and washer, and keep the fall on the waste pipe steady towards the drain. Leave the hose loose in the standpipe with air round it. After fitting, run a spin cycle and watch for water backing up the standpipe.

Common Questions
Does a washing machine need its own trap?
Yes, the waste has to go through a trap before the drain, either a standpipe trap like this or an appliance trap under the sink.
Can a dishwasher use the same standpipe?
Some installers do it, but the flow from two machines at once can overflow the pipe. A separate connection is the tidier answer.
Is a 40mm waste big enough for a washer?
Yes, 40mm is the normal size for a washing machine drain. Keep the pipe falling steadily so the pump-out gets away quickly.
