Description

A gate type pump valve lets you isolate a central heating pump so it can be changed with little water lost. Looking for pump valves 22mm? That is the usual size for house heating, and we also list 28mm for bigger systems. They suit heating engineers, plumbers and anyone changing a tired pump.

You fit one on each side of the pump, on the flow and the return. One end is a compression joint that grips the pipe with a nut and olive. The other is a union nut that carries the pump. Inside is a gate, worked by a turning head, which gives a clear path when fully open so it does not choke the pump. Fit new pump washers each time the pump comes off, and set the valves so you can reach the heads with the pump in place.

We keep pump valves on the shelf at our Glasgow counter. Collect from the shop, or order online.

Common Questions

Gate type or ball type pump valve?

A gate type takes several turns to close and gives a clear bore when open. A ball type shuts with a quarter turn. Both let you change a pump with little water lost.

What size pump valve do I need?

Most domestic heating pumps sit on 22mm pipe, so 22mm valves are the usual choice. Use 28mm on larger systems with 28mm pipework.

Why are my pump valves still passing water?

Sludge or scale can stop the gate seating, so it never fully shuts. Old valves also wear. If you are changing the pump, it is often worth changing the valves at the same time.

Do I need new washers when I change the pump?

Yes. Fit new fibre washers between the pump and the valve unions every time. Old washers are squashed and will often weep.
