The lockshield valve with drain off angled 10mm is a microbore balancing valve with a built-in drain point, for 10mm pipe rising from the floor into the side of a radiator. On the shelf at Plumb Parts, Glasgow.
Fit this lockshield valve with drain off angled 10mm on microbore heating, where thin 10mm pipe comes up through the floor and turns into the radiator. Besides setting the flow through the rad, it has a drain cock so the radiator can be emptied on its own.
Microbore lockshield valve with drain off angled 10mm
Plenty of houses from the seventies and eighties were plumbed in 10mm copper fed from a manifold. Those systems need valves with a 10mm connection, and this one saves you from using reducers on the inlet. The angled body suits the usual layout where the pipe pops up beside the rad leg.
- 10mm pipe connection
- Angled pattern
- Lockshield head for balancing
- Drain point on the valve body
To use the drain, shut the valves at both ends, fit a hose to the outlet and slowly open it. Because microbore pipe is narrow, it blocks more easily with sludge, so this is a good time to check how dirty the water looks. If it comes out black, the system may be due a flush and an inhibitor dose.
Set the lockshield during balancing and refit the cap so it stays where you left it.
Other radiator parts, keys and air vents are in the radiators and accessories section.

Common Questions
Can I use a standard radiator valve on microbore pipe?
Only with reducers, and that adds joints and bulk beside the rad. A valve made for 10mm, like this one, takes the microbore straight in and looks tidier.
Why do microbore radiators heat up slowly?
The small 10mm bore carries less water and clogs with sludge more easily than standard small bore pipe. A flush and an inhibitor dose often help, along with balancing the lockshields properly.
How do I open the drain point on this valve?
Isolate the rad at both ends, push a hose onto the drain outlet and open the drain slowly with a spanner or key. Close it firmly before you turn the valves back on.
