A Solder Ring Straight Cylinder Union joins copper pipe to the 1″ threaded boss on a hot water cylinder. Its female union nut screws onto the boss, and a Solder Ring socket on the other end takes the pipe.
Why fit a Solder Ring Straight Cylinder Union
Cylinders get replaced, and you want to be able to take the pipework off without cutting it. The union nut does that. Undo it and the pipe lifts away from the cylinder, ready to go back on the new one. The 22mm x 1″ is the usual size on domestic cylinders, and the 28mm x 1″ suits larger pipework into the same size boss.

Common Questions
Which cylinder union size do I need?
Most domestic cylinder bosses take a 1″ union. Choose 22mm x 1″ for standard pipework, or 28mm x 1″ where the system is piped in 28mm.
Do I need sealant on a cylinder union?
A washer inside the union does the sealing, so tape on the thread is not needed. Wipe the boss face clean and smooth first.
Straight or bent cylinder union?
Pick the straight one when the pipe leaves the cylinder in line with the boss. Pick a bent union when it must turn 90 degrees as it leaves.
